COMMUNITY DAY TO RAISE AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER IN AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY
Washington, DC (September 16, 2002) - FOR THIS CAUSE--Breast Cancer, a Washington, DC-based community organization committed to promoting breast cancer awareness and education, has partnered with the Greater Southeast Community Hospital, to sponsor a Community Day from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., October 12 on the hospital grounds at 1310 Southern Ave SE, Washington. Over 500 participants are expected to take part in the event.
The daylong event will feature a health fair, breast cancer seminars, empowerment workshops, children's activities and lunch.
FOR THIS CAUSE--Breast Cancer is the brainchild of Executive Director, V. Nona Ogunsula, who established the awareness organization because of the high numbers of African Americans who succumb to breast cancer.
"Something has to be done to address breast cancer in our area," said Ms. Ogunsula. "If we can save one life through education during this event, it will have been worth it. My hope is that this day will encourage dialogue between the community, researchers and health professionals, who are engaged daily in the fight against the disease. Breast cancer is a devastating disease and it can happen to anyone of us."
FOR THIS CAUSE--Breast Cancer's major sponsors are Safeway, Inc. and D.C. Chartered Health Plan.
