FAMILY-ORIENTED COMMUNITY DAY TO RAISE AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER

Washington, DC (October 1, 2003) - FOR THIS CAUSE, Inc., a Washington, DC-based community organization committed to promoting
breast cancer awareness and education, has partnered with the YWCA of the National Capital Area, to sponsor its 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Event
and Community Day from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2003. The event will be held at the YWCA and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Library at 9th & G Streets NW, downtown Washington, D.C. Over 500 participants are expected to take part in the event.
The day-long event will feature a health and fitness fair, breast cancer seminars, "For Survivors Only" workshops, empowerment workshops, lunch
and children's activities to enable families to attend with their children. Door prizes will be awarded hourly. Speakers include: Mayor Anthony Williams,
Dr. Fred J. Corder, Acting Health Officer for Prince George's County Maryland; Renee Nash of WHUR (Breast Cancer Survivor); and presenters from
the National Cancer Institute, Lombardi Cancer Center, and the Department of Health for the District of Columbia.
The Breast Cancer Event and Community Day was established to raise awareness regarding the fact that Washington, D.C. has the highest breast
cancer mortality rate in the United States. "We are committed through our community events and support programs to help reduce the breast cancer incidence
and mortality rate in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area," said V. Nona Ogunsula, Executive Director of FOR THIS CAUSE, Inc. Earlier this year, FOR
THIS CAUSE in partnership with Safeway, Inc. (Eastern Division), funded a free mammogram program at Greater Southeast Community Hospital in
Washington, D.C. for high-risk, under-insured, and/or un-insured women, age 39 and younger.
Volunteers and community groups have been an integral part of informing women and their families about this deadly disease. In honor of them, FOR
THIS CAUSE has initiated the Jacqueline P. Harrison Memorial Award in honor of one such volunteer who succumbed to breast cancer in July 2003. FOR
THIS CAUSE has named Safeway Inc., the Breast Cancer Event 's presenting sponsor, the 2003 Jacqueline P. Harrison recipient because of its strong
commitment to making a difference in its community.
The Breast Cancer Event and Community Day's other sponsors are the YWCA, COMCAST, SEIU, FOX5, and the Office on Women's Health in
the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services.
