Washington, DC
(December 30, 2002) - FOR THIS CAUSE, Inc., a Washington, DC-based community
organization committed to promoting breast cancer awareness and education, and
Safeway, Inc., will announce a major grant to Greater Southeast Community
Hospital at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 31 in the Auditorium of the
hospital. The hospital is located at 1310 Southern Avenue, SE.
The grant will provide funding for breast cancer screening services for the
uninsured and underinsured who do not fall under existing programs, an
outreach coordinator, and support services.
"More women per capita die from breast cancer in Washington, D.C. than
anywhere else in the United States," said V. Nona Ogunsula, Executive
Director of FOR THIS CAUSE, Inc. "We are working to change that by
promoting awareness and education, and supporting organizations that provide
breast cancer services and support to women in the Washington, D.C. area.
"That's why this partnership with Safeway is so important. Safeway has
continued to demonstrate that it really cares about our community. We are
grateful that they have chosen to support our organization and its efforts to
stamp out breast cancer."
Earlier this year, FOR THIS CAUSE presented a health fair and breast education
program at Greater Southeast Community Hospital that was sponsored by a number
of local companies including Safeway and D.C. Chartered Health Plan, and WTTG
FOX5. Over 200 people attended the Community Day event.
FOR THIS CAUSE, Inc. is a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C. whose
mission is to bring together a diverse community to address the profound
physical, psychological, social, and economic affects breast cancer has on the
